REVIEW: The Possession

This story is loosely based on an L.A. Times article about a wooden box sold on ebay that had an evil spirit it.  Its been adapted for the big screen but the key difference between this and other exorcism type movies is that instead of a catholic priest performing the exorcism, it is an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi banishing the evil spirit.

For such a serious topic, this film had great moments of levity and humor.  Jeffrey Dean Morgan (from Grey's Anatomy) played the father of the possessed daughter Em, did a great job.  Carrying the film with a strong inner life. The wonderful Kyra Sedgewick, who plays a tough character in "The Closer" does a fine job portraying the opposite of her "Closer" character as a mother, falling apart at the seams as she watches her daughter disintegrate. In a nutshell, a great ensemble cast. Unfortunately, the script was a bit weak and I still have yet to see a film in this genre that is as well done and scares me more than the original "Exorcist", Pea Soup and all!!

This viewer gives it two stars.
